Info

The Close Unnecessary Windows toolbar script was created to deal with the proliferation of pop-unders (background pop-ups) on the Web. Pop-unders can often be caused by the user simply clicking anywhere on the page, and it is quite difficult for a browser to prevent them from opening up.

Clicking the script button in Camino’s toolbar will close all browser windows except the front one, those with more than one tab, and those displaying pages whose titles have been added to an “exceptions” list (including the Downloads window). This is a quick and easy way to close pop-unders.

Requirements

This script requires the patch from Bug 467697, which landed on the CVS trunk on December 09, 2008. As a result, it will only work with Camino trunk builds from December 10, 2008 and later. This includes Camino 2.0b1.

Installation & Usage

Simply drag the Close Unnecessary Windows.scpt to your user’s ~/Library/Scripts/Applications/Camino folder, creating the folders if necessary. Customize your toolbar in Camino to add Close Unnecessary Windows. When you want to close unnecessary windows, click the toolbar button.

Update

This script has been updated to no longer close any background windows with more than one tab, so that it will close pop-under advertisements but not potentially useful background windows. Exceptions can also be added to the script. For instructions, simply open the script in Script Editor.

Due to the new features, this script has been renamed from Close Background Windows to Close Unnecessary Window. Additionally, it is now hosted on Lisa’s Applescripts for Camino site.
